Back to School Read Alouds

There is something magical about back-to-school read alouds. Gathering your class on the carpet and reading to them helps ease first-day jitters. It also helps you all feel close and like a family right off the bat. There are hundreds of titles that are great for the first month of school, so it can be hard to narrow down a favorite. Today, I have 10 of my personal favorites to share with you!

The King of Kindergarten, by Derrick Barnes

Starting kindergarten is a big milestone–and the hero of this story is ready to make his mark! He’s dressed himself, eaten a pile of pancakes, and can’t wait to be part of a whole new kingdom of kids.

I’m Happy Sad Today, by Lory Britain

You can be sad about something, while also feeling happy. Or nervous, while also being excited. This story explores the idea of having mixed feelings…something each of your students probably is feeling!

Speak Up, by Miranda Paul

Teach students that their voice matters right at the beginning of the year! This is the story of a group of students who learn that everything they say (from a thank you, to pointing out how a rule isn’t fair for all students) has an impact.

The Pigeon HAS to Go to School, by Mo Willems

Pigeon has a problem with going to school. He already knows everything. What if he learns too much? He just doesn’t want to! Your students will love this funny book about a familiar character!

All are Welcome, by Alexandra Penfold

Follow a group of students through a day at a school where everyone is welcome! This is the perfect book for establishing an inclusive classroom community on day one.

Ruby Finds a Worry, by Tom Percival

Chances are, some of your students are feeling a little worried about school. This story will help them realize that worries and nerves are normal! Everyone has them, including Ruby and her friend.

A book that explores the idea that we are all unique, and sometimes that can make you feel like an outsider when you go to a new place. This story sparks many conversations about embracing what makes us different and making everyone feel included.

Be You!, by Peter H. Reynolds

A joyful story about the differences in each person that makes the world (or our classrooms) a special place to be!

We Move Together, by Kelly Fritsch, Anne Mcguire, and Eduardo Trejos

We Move Together follows a mixed-ability group of kids as they deal with everyday barriers and find joy and connection in disability culture. This is a great story to build acceptance in your students!
