Gingerbread Week in Kindergarten Made Easy

Who here has a Gingerbread Week in their kindergarten classroom? I LIVE for all things gingerbread in December. The different versions of the book, building gingerbread houses, making gingerbread crafts, and more! It’s all so festive and fun for little learners. Today, I have some of my favorite gingerbread activities to share with you. These will make your gingerbread week planning easier, guaranteed!

Gingerbread Stories

With so many different versions of ‘The Gingerbread Man’, it’s a lot of fun to read several books with your students throughout gingerbread week! I like to read a few, and give students the opportunity to discuss the similarities and differences. We also study the problem, solution, setting, and characters of each book! In my Gingerbread Printables Pack, I have graphic organizers for several Gingerbread Man books for you to use with your students! This pack also includes fun writing responses, a gingerbread house STEM activity, and so much more.

Gingerbread Week Writing

Gingerbread Writing

After reading a few books, your students will be ready to write! ‘How to Make Gingerbread’ and ‘How to Catch a Gingerbread Man’ are both great prompts to write about in kindergarten! I have graphic organizers, flipbooks, and writing pages for both of these prompts in my TPT store!

Gingerbread virtual activities

Virtual Activities

In all of the chaos of December, you don’t want to have to print and prep every little thing that the student do. Virtual write the room activities are a great way to virtually stay within the theme, and save yourself some prep time! I have both a ‘making 10’ write the room activity, as well as a punctuation practice activity. Both are totally digital, and super fun!

Gingerbread Word Building

An adorable way to build sight words is with Gingerbread Cookies! Use the paper cookie sheet as the word building mat. Students pull a sight word card and use the cookie letter cards to build each word on the pan. After building the words, students practice writing each one on a recording sheet. This is a perfect center activity for gingerbread week!

Gingerbread Crack-the-Code

This fun activity reviews beginning sounds! Students choose a task card. The card will show three pictures. Students use phonemic awareness skills to isolate the beginning sound of each word and write the letter for that sound. When they can identify all three sounds and letters in order, they will then be able to build a new CVC word, which they will write on the recording sheet.

Build a Gingerbread House

This punctuation activity is the perfect center or small group lesson during gingerbread week! Students decide which punctuation mark they should add to a variety of sentences. As they choose correctly, they earn pieces of a paper gingerbread house! After earning each piece, they can build their house, and decorate it the way they want! This is a great way to review punctuation and types of sentences, while perfectly fitting within your theme.

Using these resources in your classroom, you will have your entire Gingerbread week planned in no time at all! My kindergarteners love using these activities, and I know yours will too! You can save money by grabbing my Gingerbread Bundle HERE, and get everything you see in this post.

Happy teaching, everyone!
