In our Classroom: A Back to School Read Aloud
I have a special announcement for you all today! I have released a picture book! It is titled In our Classroom: How We Learn and Play in our Own Way. I want to take you all on a tour of this new book, and give you some ideas on how to use it during this back-to-school season!
What is ‘In our Classroom’ about?
In Our Classroom helps empower students by teaching them to think about what is just right for them, celebrate their differences, and embrace one another to build an inclusive classroom community. It is the perfect tool for back to school in any classroom!
In this story, a variety of students learn about the different ways they learn and play in class. They learn that they can be a community of diverse learners, and all be true to themselves!
How can I teach with the story?
This story is perfect for the first weeks of school. Because it sets the stage for kindness and community, you can turn this text into a great mini-lesson!
Begin by reading the story whole group. Then, break into small groups and have students create posters about how your classroom will show kindness to all. Have students present the posters to each other!
Or, as an alternate idea, read the story and create a classroom pledge. Make the pledge all about kindness and inclusiveness. Hang the pledge on the wall and say it together each morning.
