6 Easy and Engaging Spring Time Kindergarten Centers Activities
It’s that time! Spring is here, so it is time to start bringing in some fun springtime-themed activities! I love Spring because it allows my students time to enjoy the outdoors, practice all the skills learned so far this year, and show everything they learned. Plus, I love looking back at our time together as the year starts to come to a close! I often find myself using different kindergarten centers activities to give students the opportunity to enjoy themselves while practicing important skills with a springtime twist.
Kindergarten Centers Activities
Kindergarten centers activities may be one of my favorite parts about teaching little learners. Watching them rotate from center to center, engaging in the activity and learning, is probably the coolest thing! At this age, they are like little sponges, and giving them the opportunity to develop skills while independently working is a huge plus in my book.
Although it takes a lot of classroom management and routine practice to ensure students are on task and working when at these kindergarten center activities. It is all worth it in the end when I get to stand and watch for a couple of minutes between groups and see all the learning happening inside my classroom.
Springtime Centers Activities
Now that it is Spring, I like to switch out my wintertime centers and give students some new options. Depending on the subject area, my center activity will change. So I thought I’d share some of my favorite springtime kindergarten centers with you to give you some ideas!
Math Centers
By this part of the year, students have learned subtraction, addition, number recognition, and greater than/less than. They have used base ten blocks, tens frames, or other methods your math program may teach them. These no-prep baseball-themed math centers are perfect for practicing all of those skills and make for a simple center that requires little direction from the teacher.
Another math favorite is my number bond flowers! If your math program focuses on number bonds, then you are going to want to include this fun flower math center! This spring math center practices number bonds 2-10. Students can decompose numbers less than or equal to ten into pairs in more than one way. I like to hang them up in the hallway for a beautiful spring number garden display. It makes the hallway cheery and gets everyone ready for Spring.
Literacy Centers
Another common time when kindergarten centers are handy is during your reading block. When working with small reading groups, you often need to find something educational and fun to keep the other students engaged, especially if you don’t want to be answering questions, tying shoes, etc., while trying to work with small groups.
Word work is an important part of the kindergarten classroom. Our little learners are just starting to form words and sentences. We want to give them any opportunity we can to practice those skills and work on building their foundation of word building and spelling! I love using a word work toolkit and switching out the activities based on the season. Get students to practice syllables, vowels, and even rhyming.
Earth Day is celebrated on April 22nd each year, and what better way to celebrate than having your students work on some writing focused on what they can do to make the world a cleaner and better place? Let students mix science and writing and kill two birds with one stone. Cover some science and writing standards at the same time! These Earth Day activities are perfect for spring.
Science Centers
When it comes to science, it should be all hands-on and interactive most of the time, and allowing students to experience science centers is a fun way to give them an opportunity to show what they have learned during a unit and to allow you to do engaging experiments in smaller groups so students can get up close and personal with the learning!
Learning the life cycle of a plant is often a standard in kindergarten. We enjoy raising plants in our classroom and watching them day after day to see how they grow and change. If you are looking for a simple center that can incorporate science standards, you may want to use this plant life cycle book or worksheet. Let students observe their plant, write about it or draw it!
I’m Done. Now What?!
It’s always hard when students start interrupting small group time and yelling, “I’m Done!” I love having early finisher activities available to my students. Students love to have an activity that stretches their minds. I love having something for students to do so they don’t bother me while teaching. The best part is I have monthly early finisher packets so that students will have new activities every time. They also revolve around the holidays and special circumstances of the month.
Kindergarten centers activities are perfect for any time of year. But if you are looking to grab all of the fun activities mentioned above, you can grab them in my Spring Activities Bundle. Use them as centers, small groups, or whole group. It’s completely up to you, and they are great practice!
