Kindergarten March Activities Round-Up

Is anyone else just completely blown away that March is already here?? This school year has been the wildest ride, and the fact that we’re already headed into Spring feels unbelievable…but also like it took a very long time to get here. Anyone else feeling that??
March is a wonderful time to review academic skills, while also busting out some fun, spring activities! Today, I have a round-up of three of my favorite March activities for Kindergarten to share with you all!

How to Catch a Leprechaun Writing

You can’t get through the month of March without celebrating St. Patrick’s Day in some form or fashion! This ‘How to Catch a Leprechaun’ resource guides students through the writing process, so they can explain how they would plan to catch a leprechaun themselves!

Punctuation Practice

This seasonal Write the Room activity asks students to determine which punctuation mark is needed at the end of each sentence. You can place cards around your classroom, or simply put them in one spot in a writing center for students to flip through. Each card has a sentence that is almost complete…it’s just missing the punctuation mark! Using the included recording sheet, students will re-write each sentence, but add the punctuation mark that they believe best fits.

This is a great way to get students engaged in the mechanics of writing, but still keep things fun! I don’t know any kinders who don’t love a Write the Room activity!

Sensory Bin Activities

At this point in the year, we are really building on our knowledge of words to perfect writing complete sentences. A great way to reach students of multiple learning types is to practice sentence writing through a hands-on activity. That’s why I love a sensory bin for practicing just about any skill!

Sentence Scramble includes 10 different March-themed sentences. The sentences are cut apart into word cards, and the word are placed in a fun, March sensory bin. Students use tweezers, or other fine-motor tools to pull the word cards out, order them correctly, and write their sentences!

Making a March sensory bin can be as simple as just layering together green materials you already have in your room! Pom Poms, beads, shredded paper, etc. all make for great sensory bin materials. You can also use colored sand, dyed rice, beans, etc! The benefits of sensory bins are great for kindergartners, and layering in this academic piece makes them even more purposeful!
