Virtual Write the Room for Spring

It’s officially Spring time! I love the Spring. I’ve shared this before, but Spring in Kindergarten is magic. It’s so fun to see how many lightbulbs have officially clicked for kids this time of year. You can really see student growth and achievement taking off, and there is nothing better.

One of the classic activities for Kindergarten, especially near the end of the year when students can be more independent, is Write the Room! Unfortunately, with all things distance learning being our reality, it can be tough to make an activity like Write the Room work. You don’t want students mingling together. You don’t want them traveling around the room touching things, because you’re supposed to be contact tracing, etc.

Fortunately, I have a solution for you that can keep this fun activity in all of our rooms, even if we’re still in ‘unprecedented times’.

Virtual Write the Room

Like all fun things during distance learning…I made this activity virtual! The educational benefits are still great. Students virtually explore an on-screen classroom and hunt for labeled cards. Clicking on the card then allows students to see what was on the card, and record their answers. I have Virtual Write the Room sets for so many themes for Kindergarten! So, in some sets all of the digital task cards will be about identifying numbers, or naming the beginning sound of a picture, etc.

Reviewing these critical skills is a great way to keep students growing, with an activity they will love! Now that we’re nearing the end of the year, you could assign different skills each week to help students spiral review the standards you’ve been teaching all year long!

Teacher Benefits of Virtual Write the Room

No Prep. Although printable Write the Room prep is minimal…there’s still some work involved! All of the cards have to be cut out, and you have to place them where you want them to go around your room. This doesn’t have to be difficult or complicated, but using a virtual alternative completely eliminates that step. And, in a world where things only got added to our plates, I am all in favor of anything that can be taken off of mine!

No Mess. Write the Room typically involves cutting and adhering cards to different parts of your room. Then, students are moving things out of the way to have a better view of the cards, or they’re crowding together at a table all trying to see the same card…which often results in a mess of knocked over supplies. At the end of Virtual Write the Room, you don’t have to walk around and clean up cards at the end of the day! That’s a huge plus if I’ve ever heard one!

No Movement. Let me expand on this one: of course we want Kinder students to be able to move around! But, as I mentioned earlier, contact tracing and social distancing rules can make it difficult in some schools to allow students to move at their own free will. A Write the Room activity leaves a lot of room for contact error, if you are trying to keep students apart. So, because this is on-screen and students can complete the activity on their own devices, you can keep students apart. Then, you can have them move in a different, more controlled environment. 🙂
