Winter Activities for Kindergarten
The holidays are over, and we are all settling into a long winter. I love celebrating winter with my students! It’s so fun to read and write about hot cocoa, snowmen, and more. Plus, it’s always great to hope for a snow day (or two) throughout the winter months. Today, I have a round-up of my favorite winter activities for kindergarten!
How to Build a Snowman
You can’t talk about winter without talking about snowmen! The two go hand-in-hand. I love to engage my students in how-to writing with the steps for building snowmen. Building a snowman is something that most students know how to do. And if they don’t, the steps are simple to teach! You can practice with playdough or clay first, or even go outside in the snow if you’re lucky enough to live in a snowy area! Have students practice with their hands, and then turn it into a how-to assignment. This activity gets students sequencing steps in order, writing, and drawing about them!
Winter Writing Rings
There are several winter words to practice this time of year! This activity gives students the opportunity to write about wintertime, winter sports, arctic animals, and hot cocoa! Students simply grab a ring of words and some writing paper. You can turn this into an ongoing center and simply change out the theme every week!
How to Dress for Winter
Are you losing your mind trying to help your kindergarteners get ready to go outside? These visuals help students see the order for putting on their winter clothes. There are mini-readers included, so you can review the steps students need to take. Then, hang the visual cues in places around your room where students need to see them! Posters, velcro charts, and various mini-books are included.
Winter Way-to-Glow Notes
After a long break, you may be looking for some ways to re-build your rapport with your families. Way-to-Glow notes are a great way to do this, and they are seasonal! Simply have a stack copied and ready for each season, and when you see a student doing something extra-positive, circle it on the form and send it home! This is so simple, but so effective in making your students and their families feel valued.
