Digital Writing Offices
I have shared in posts like this one about how much I enjoy our writing time in Kindergarten. I’ve also talked a few times about my printable Writing Office, and how it has saved me so much instructional time by giving my students the power to answer their own spelling questions while they are writing!
But, with distance learning becoming our reality in the past year, it became difficult for me to support my writers while they were at home. So, I developed digital writing offices that helped my kindergarteners grow as writers, even when we weren’t together!
What is a digital writing office?
Similarly to the printable offices, my digital writing offices include all of the resources that a young writer may need when they are writing independently. Things like alphabet charts, sight words, color words, punctuation cues, and more are included in my digital offices. So, whether students are at home, or socially distanced right there in their classroom, they have the power to answer their own spelling and writing questions.
Benefits of Using Digital Writing Offices
1.) Students develop independence during writing time. They will know that they have the answers they need at their fingertips!
2.) Student confidence in writing grows. When our students don’t have to rely on us to figure out how to write a letter or spell a word, their sense of autonomy increases. This helps them begin to identify as a ‘writer’, which is so important to boost their confidence and help them grow!
3.) You will stop answering the same questions every week. This saves your sanity a little, but also frees up your time to teach other things!
4.) Completely paperless = NO prep! Unlike printable offices, digital writing offices are easy to simply assign to students with no printing or cutting required. You don’t have to worry about wear and tear throughout the year, or about pieces falling off and disappearing.
